Frank Capra In the extremely popular films of Frank Capra, a Sicilian who came to America with his family when he was a child, the American Dream always borders on disaster. Capra tapped into what the public wanted during the Depression: high quality ‘feel good’ movies with heroes who were ‘little men’ who triumphed over big business and corrupt politicians. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, You Can’t Take It With You and It’s a Wonderful Life are classics of their type and as much loved (by most) today as ever they were. Quantum (Meta-)physics: The End of Certainty? There can be little doubt that quantum theory is one of the most thought provoking and challenging of all scientific revolutions. It is both compelling and baffling, yet some insist that it must be incomplete or fundamentally flawed. It certainly raises important questions (for scientists and philosophers): do the discoveries of quantum theorists such as Bohr, Heisenberg and Schr?dinger, among others, show or imply that “certainty” is not attainable? To what extent, if any, can these theories be generalised (into something like a “world-view” or a broad view of the nature of matter and energy)? Would a unifying theory help us to overcome some of these obstacles or would it introduce even greater complexity and perplexity? Indeed, was “certainty” attainable in any sense prior to these revolutionary developments? We shall find out in this fully illustrated course! More...

Will neuroscience unlock some of the secrets (in all probability)? Join us in this fully illustrated day and find out! More...

Philosophical Concepts in Film: Paths to Freedom Many philosophers from Socrates and Plato to Kant, Rousseau, Locke, Nietzsche, Russell, Nozick and Rawls, have reflected profoundly on freedom, autonomy and liberty. We look carefully at the connections with reference to classic films such as The Birth of a Nation, Singing in the Rain, Casablanca, The Bicycle Thief and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as well as highly regarded recent works such as The Deer Hunter, The Age of Innocence, Braveheart, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Drive and the Star Wars series. Philosophical Concepts in Film: Appearance and Reality The question of the relationship between appearance and reality is an enduring one among philosophers (and among film-makers), and it is arguably more important than ever in light of the dramatic emergence of the Internet and the accelerating impact of “virtual reality” on our lives. Neuroscience in the Age of Philosophy: The Big Questions Some of the most recent advances in neuroscience provide exciting and thought provoking perspectives on the nature of thinking, “madness”, reason, sexuality, consciousness, freewill, religiosity (or non-religiosity), emotion and embodied experience. We focus on some of the most exciting recent discoveries in neuroscience and look closely at the central arguments: does the emergence of “neuroscience” pose a threat to “philosophy”, in some sense? Does “philosophy” pose a threat to “neuroscience”? Can neuroscience be used to “debunk” certain claims about the mind and the brain, or about their interaction, if any? Does neuroscience demand a reconsideration of philosophical perspectives on reason, thinking and the emotions? We shall find out, in this fully illustrated day course. More...
Neuroscience and Metaphysics Far from demonstrating the “end of metaphysics”, many recent breakthroughs in neuroscience do seem to raise more metaphysical questions, for example, concerning dualism and determinism, the “mind-body” problem, freewill, subjective experience, mysticism, intentionality, explanatory gaps, indeterminacy and uncertainty, among many others. We look at some of the most notable recent advances and the metaphysical dimensions and questions that have arisen, in this fully illustrated day course. More...
