Forensic psychologists perform a wide range of roles in the criminal justice system, including sentencing recommendations, treatment recommendations, assessment of future risk, evaluation of witness credibility, and must be able to translate psychological information into a legal framework understood by a judge and/or jury. This course provides an introduction to issues surrounding the practice of forensic psychology. Topics will include the legal concept of insanity and its assessment, the detection of deceit, criminal profiling, cognitive interviewing and investigative hypnosis.
Course Content
- What are the roles and functions of forensic psychologists – what do they do and in what contexts?
- An introduction to various forms of mental disorders and their diagnosis
- How these various forms of mental disorders are interpreted in the context of legal systems; the law with specific reference to the defence under criminal law of 'insanity'
- History and research into the analysis and clinical detection of deceit, looking at various approaches ranging from polygraph machines to linguistic patterns and facial movements
- Eyewitness memory, its reliability and unreliability and various techniques such as cognitive interviewing or forensic hypnosis, which have been developed in an attempt to improve on the recall of witnessed events
- Criminal profiling and the study of behavioural patterns evidenced in crimes and whether they can be interpreted to provide some indication of the identity of the likely perpetrator

Secure Parking is available through the RPAH Medical Centre located on the corner of Missenden Road and Carillon Avenue (entry to the car park is via Elizabeth Street, off Carillion Avenue). Parking is available on weekdays only between the hours of 7:00AM – 7:00PM at a rate of $38/day or $9/day after validating your ticket at CCE’s reception. All CCE participants who validate their tickets at reception are required to park their vehicles on Level B3. If the validated ticket does not register in the car park’s ticketing machine, cancel the transaction then reinsert your ticket into the ticketing machine until the $9 fee appears.
