In this practical class, learn how to produce a professional-looking photo book. Beginning with a set of your own hand-picked images (200+), learn about the different book types, see samples from some of the best companies, learn about their product options, plus the advantages and any disadvantages they might have. Participants will learn how to make their own page layouts using Booksmart (from www.blurb.com), how to create good page design, how to access new and exciting fonts, create custom backgrounds and how to add textures and special effects to give their book project a unique feel. The idea in this class is to work with a set of previously edited photos and explore ways to put the final touches on the book project during the workshop.
Course Content
- Learn basic and advanced page layout tricks and tips
- How to add, and edit text
- Stretching panoramas across double-page spreads
- Fading pages to another colour
- Creating page breaks and section breaks
- Filters and other special effects
- Exporting the book project
- Uploading the book project to the Internet from home to the print company using the same (free) software used at CCE
- Overview on what different book companies offer and book styles
Blurb’s Booksmart software allows each book to reside on its servers for 14 days before it is paid for – this gives the tutor time to review the book project online and provide feedback so if there are any glaring mistakes, a new, corrected version, can be uploaded before final payment is made and you are 100% committed to the print job (Note: you have two weeks before you have to pay, or before the book file is deleted off the Booksmart server).
Please note that our tutor will distribute several introductory Quicktime movies during the class. These also remain online at www.vimeo.com or at www.robinnicholsworkshops.blogspot.com
Some sample books can be viewed online at: http://robinnicholsworkshops.blogspot.com/2011/08/morocco-and-oman-with-cce.html
Course Outcomes:
Students will learn book and picture preparation techniques that will enable them to produce a high quality book. They will also learn how to perform basic photo manipulation and image retouching to make future book projects even more spectacular.
